HD troubles

Hello everyone. I am tonight writting from my old C400 – yeah I also have a Dell computer, how lame eh?. I have a good reason for that, my good old T42p has its drive gone bad!

Clunck clunck from the hard drive is really not a good sign. I was starting to install Prey. I wanted to play a bit but during the install noises from the inside of the machine annonced a bad bad crappy event.

A 60Go 7200rpm 2 yo drive is dying. With ALL my PHOTOS and SONGS and DOCUMENTS! Yeah that sucks!!!

I have been trying to rescue some data but no way I could get anything from it. I was able to list some directory on the 2 partitions but the drive could not hold on and have the head aligned for long enough.

If you have any idea on how I can rescue the maximun data from it, I’d be glad!

20060925 update: after a few plug and replug, and few turn up side down and shaking the disk without being able to access anything or be able to see what’s inside without hearing the heads going clunk clunk. I finally opted for a physical try last Freezing method. In a plastic bag, the ziploc kind – you want to avoid condensation too, I put my HD in the freezer for a morning. So because of the cold the metalic moving parts would shrink and eventually get into a safe position.

So after getting it out of the freezer, I plug it and I hear the disks spinning which is good. but no heads moving around. Oh well just let it spin for a while. Then a few clunks and krrkrkrkrr <- sound of heads seeking data. It moves and read the disks! yeah I hurry to back up as much as I can on the server and anywhere I can. I am not able to copy a few things. Anyhow I was able to use as if nothing happend then after. I even stuck it back into my thinkpad and yeah it booted and ran as if nothing happened…crappy crap he.

Never the less I having it replaced by IBM for a brand new disk! I wanted to format everything soon or later, so here is the opportunity.
